Why so many people get burned
The R36S has no big brand behind it — no official manufacturer website, no authorized dealer program. That's why it costs a fraction of branded handhelds, and that's also why marketplaces are full of lookalikes. The community keeps public lists of sellers who ship clones while using official-looking product photos. Common traps:
- Marketplace listings with rock-bottom prices — if a "R36S" costs less than the bare cost of the real components, it's a clone.
- "PRO" or "HD" versions that don't exist — devices sold as "R36S PRO 20K games" or "R36HD" use different hardware; standard firmware will never boot on them.
- Sellers that can't tell you the board revision — anyone selling genuine units can answer "V21 or V30" instantly.
Buying checklist (60 seconds)
- Ask the seller: "Which board revision — V21 or V30?" No answer = walk away.
- When it arrives, check the system info in RetroArch: it must report ~1GB of RAM, not 497MB.
- If you have a transparent shell: count the RAM chips. Two = original.
- Ultimate test: flash standard ArkOS on a spare SD card. Original boots; clones show a black screen with a flashing red LED.

Is the R36S itself a "clone"?
The R36S is an open-hardware handheld with no trademark owner — the "original" is the reference design with the RK3326 chipset and V21/V30 boards, fully supported by the open-source firmware community. "Clones" are lookalikes built on cheaper hardware that can't run that firmware.
My R36S shows a black screen with standard firmware. Is it fake?
