How to Tell if Your R36S Is a Clone

Short answer

A genuine R36S has two RAM chips on its board, boots standard ArkOS without trouble, and its SD card carries an EASYROMS partition. Clones usually show one RAM chip, a black screen and a flashing red LED when you try standard ArkOS, and different dtb files on the card, such as rf3536k4ka.dtb.

The 9 checks at a glance

Some checks need only your eyes. Others need the console switched on, or its SD card in a computer. No single check settles everything on its own, but two or three pointing the same way give you a clear answer.

Visual checks: what you can see before switching it on

1. Count the RAM chips

The R36S has 1 GB of DDR3L memory spread over two chips. The wiki documents EmuELEC clones with a single RAM chip, and points out that a transparent shell lets you see the difference without opening anything.

Good to know

On an opaque shell, skip this one rather than unscrewing the back. The software checks below get you to the same answer with less risk. Keep in mind that one chip is a strong clone sign, while two chips alone prove little: confirm with a second check.

2. Look at the D-pad and the ABXY letters

Photo comparisons shared on r/R36S, which Google's AI summary also relays, describe the original's cross as square and its ABXY letters as embossed. The wiki adds that some clones use a different font: a crooked or italic X, or very thin lettering.

Treat button details as a hint, not a verdict. They come from side-by-side photos, not from a spec sheet. The X button is the easiest one to compare against a picture of a known original.

3. Check the volume grills

According to the wiki, the original has larger, thicker volume grills, and the clones it documents have thinner ones. You need a reference photo or a second console to judge this, which is why it sits low on the list.

Software checks: what the console and its card tell you

4. Power it on without an SD card

The R36S has no internal storage. Its system lives on a microSD card, and the console has two card slots. Some clones boot with no card inserted and stop on the message "Can't find any systems". The wiki lists that behavior as one of the clearest clone signs.

“Can't find any systems”

5. Read the partition names on the SD card

Put the system card in a computer and look at the drive names it shows. On the clones the wiki documents, you will find an EMUELEC or EEROMS partition where the standard setup uses EASYROMS. Reading the names changes nothing on the card.

6. Watch the boot screen

The wiki lists a missing "ArkOS 2.0 (release date)" loading message as a clone sign. Many clones run EmuELEC ES v4.7 instead, the same firmware found on the Gaminja and Kinhank K36 handhelds. If the boot screen shows EmuELEC branding, go on to check 8.

7. Check the memory figure in RetroArch

Open RetroArch's system information screen and read the memory line. On the clones the wiki documents, it reports 497 MB of system memory. The R36S is specified with 1 GB of RAM, so a figure that low is a red flag worth a closer look.

8. Run standard ArkOS from a spare card

Write a standard ArkOS image to a spare microSD card and boot from it. An original R36S starts normally. On the EmuELEC clones, the wiki reports a black screen and a flashing red LED. Keep the card that came with the console untouched, so you can always go back.

The decisive test

This is the most telling test, because it checks what the board can run rather than how the shell looks. It's also the one that scares new owners most. A black screen here does not mean the console is dead: read the section on clone firmware below.

Other hints from the wiki's list

  • A charging animation appears while the console is switched off.
  • The FN button behaves like the Y button.
  • The menu has no Wi-Fi option. The R36S has no built-in Wi-Fi either, so this one is weak on its own.

The dtb files that give clones away (check 9)

A dtb file describes the board to the operating system. That makes it one of the most reliable tells, since it reflects the hardware itself. The wiki lists three names found on clone SD cards:

Clone dtb files to look for

  • rk3326-evb-lp3-v12-linux.dtb
  • rf3536k4ka.dtb
  • rf3536k3ka.dtb

Look for them on the card that came with your console. Finding one points to a clone board. Write the exact name down before you look for replacement firmware, because it tells you which board you have.

Board markings help too. One clone board photographed for the wiki is printed "RF35XE-MB V1.1_20240508", and the K36 carries the internal name "RF3500KG".

Failed several of these checks, or would rather not gamble? Our R36S comes from the line our supplier sells as “Dual Chip Original”, and you have 30 days to return it.

The "internal storage" clone with an RK3128 chip

One variant breaks the pattern above. Its operating system sits on built-in eMMC storage instead of the SD card, and it runs on a Rockchip RK3128, a weaker chip than the RK3326 inside the R36S.

Watch out

According to the wiki, this model works with neither the K36 images nor ArkOS for clones. Identify it before you spend an evening flashing builds that will never boot on it.

What we sell, and what we can show you

Our supplier's catalogue lists two R36S lines: a basic R36S and a more expensive "R36S Dual Chip Original". We buy the second one. That is what our supplier states, not a lab test of our own, and we would rather say so plainly.

The supplier also sent us photos of the boards it ships. The first shows a board printed R36S-V21 and dated 2024-12-18, with the Rockchip RK3326 and two RAM chips at the top left.

To keep in mind

One caution about those labels. The community wiki does not use the names V21 or V30, so don't read them as a community standard. They are what is printed on the boards our supplier shows us. The nine checks above are what you can verify on your own unit.

You will find R36S listings at roughly $25 to $50 elsewhere. Ours costs $79.99 with a 64 GB card, or $89.99 with 128 GB. The dual-chip line costs us more than the basic one, and the price also covers free tracked shipping.

Sellers the community wiki has flagged, and the ones it recommends

The wiki keeps a list of stores reported to have shipped EmuELEC clones. It reflects reports collected up to May 2025, so read it as a record, not a live rating. Stores it names include:

Reported to have shipped clones

  • Amazon: BSTXY, D-MuXue
  • Temu: Baijiai, Discount CC shop, LeYiXia, Staco Digital, YLW Global
  • eBay: focus_on_mall
  • Alibaba: Shenzhen Smart Concept Electronics
  • Other storefronts: 3C Moker Store, GAMINJA Global Store

Recommended or successful purchases

The full list on the wiki is longer. The same page recommends six AliExpress stores: 001 Ali Choice Store, BOYHOM Store, Factory Game Direct Store, Retro Game Supermaket Store, SUPER FUN GAME Store and YYDZKJ Store.

It also records successful purchases from YingShou and YUYIU on Temu, Xiaoyu USA branch on Amazon, and Alphawolf Supply Co. on Shopee. The wiki notes that some of these links are affiliate links.

A store that shipped a clone once may ship the right board later, and the reverse is true too. Whoever you buy from, run checks 4 to 9 as soon as the box arrives, while you can still send it back.

Already have a clone? What to do next

A clone is not necessarily a lost cause. The wiki documents firmware made for these boards, including K36 images and ArkOS builds for clones, and it has separate sections on clone variants it considers usable. What fails is standard ArkOS or AmberELEC, which is why so many owners hit the black screen.

  1. Identify the board: note the dtb file name and the partition names (checks 5 and 9).
  2. Rule out the RK3128 internal storage model, which the clone builds do not support.
  3. Pick a build made for your board. Our R36S firmware and custom OS guide walks through ArkOS and the other systems.
  4. Flash it to a new card, and keep the card that came with the console as a backup.

If you bought it from us and it fails these checks, write to contact@r36s-console.com with your order number. You have 30 days after you receive it to return it. A console that is not what we described counts as non-conformity, and in that case we send you a prepaid return label.

If you bought it elsewhere, contact that seller first and use the platform's return process. Keep your photos and a picture of the RetroArch memory screen: they make your case concrete.

FAQ

How do I tell if my R36S is real?

Start with the software: boot without an SD card, read the card's partition names, and check RetroArch's memory figure. A clone may show "Can't find any systems", an EMUELEC or EEROMS partition, or 497 MB. Then try standard ArkOS on a spare card: an original boots, a documented clone shows a black screen and a flashing red LED.

Is the R36S legal?

The R36S is a Linux handheld that runs community firmware such as ArkOS. The legal questions people raise concern game files rather than the device itself: copyright depends on who owns each game and on the law where you live. We are a store, not a law firm, so we can't give legal advice for your situation.

What is the R36S a copy of?

No source we trust says it copies one specific device. What is documented: released in October 2023, Rockchip RK3326, 1 GB of RAM, community Linux firmware such as ArkOS, AmberELEC and ROCKNIX. Listings often say "Anbernic R36S", but it is not an Anbernic model. The clones here are copies of the R36S itself.

Is the R36 Max a clone?

No. The R36 Max is its own model, not a fake R36S: 4-inch 720 x 720 square screen, 4000 mAh battery, and the same RK3326 chip with 1 GB of RAM according to its maker. It is another device on the same RK3326 platform. Its screen and board differ, so the R36S checks above don't carry over one for one.

Where can I buy an authentic R36S?

Any store can ship either board, so checking matters more than the storefront. The community wiki recommends six AliExpress stores and notes that some of its links are affiliate links. We sell the R36S from our supplier's "Dual Chip Original" line: $79.99 for 64 GB, free tracked shipping, 30-day returns. Wherever you buy, test on arrival.

If you want an R36S from the supplier line shown above, with returns handled by a US company, see the original R36S on our home page: $79.99 for 64 GB, delivered 5 to 10 business days after shipping.
