Two grips
that sit in your palms.
On the back, the horizontal body ends in two rounded grips that nestle into your palms. The screen sits in the centre, with the controls on either side, under your thumbs.

The 4.2-inch IPS panel shows 1024 × 768 pixels, about 305 pixels per inch. That is 2.56 times as many pixels as a 640 × 480 screen.
Games designed in 4:3 fill the whole screen, with no bars at the sides. The final result depends on the game, the emulator and the scaling settings.

Wi-Fi and sound
Built-in Wi-Fi.
Two front-facing speakers.
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is built into the body, with no dongle to plug in. Depending on the installed system, it is used for updates and for two-player games over a local network, between compatible consoles. No online play is promised, and no Bluetooth is stated.
The two speakers sit in the lower corners of the front, where your hands don’t rest: the sound stays clear while you play.
Physical controls
D-pad, ABXY, two sticks.

On the left, the D-pad sits above the analogue stick. On the right, the ABXY buttons sit above the second stick. The square SELECT and START buttons are at the top of the front.
At the corners, four stacked triggers: L1 over L2, R1 over R2, with L2 and R2 as digital buttons. Power, Reset, volume and FN are on the top edge.
Battery life
3500 mAh.
USB-C charging.
The 3500 mAh Li-Po battery is engraved on the back of the console. Battery life: up to 8 h at best, as stated by the manufacturer. It varies with brightness, volume, emulator and game.
Charging goes through the USB-C port marked DC 5V. Use a 5 V adapter rated at least 1.5 A: no mains adapter is supplied.
Two microSD slots

On the bottom edge, the TF1-OS slot holds the system, ArkOS 2.0 installed at the factory, and the TF2-GAME slot takes the games. There is no internal storage.
The console comes with 64 GB on a microSD card. Usable space after formatting is slightly lower, and the number of games depends on their size.

R36H Pro Max or R36H: what’s the difference?
Both consoles share the same Rockchip RK3326 chip: neither is more powerful than the other. The R36H Pro Max moves to a 4.2-inch screen at 1024 × 768, compared with 3.5 inches at 640 × 480 on the R36H. It adds built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a 3500 mAh battery instead of 3000. Its D-pad sits above the left stick, the opposite of the R36H.
Does the R36H Pro Max have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth?
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is built in. Depending on the installed system, it is used for updates and for two-player games over a local network with a compatible console. Online play is not among the stated uses, and no Bluetooth is stated for this model.
What kinds of games can it emulate?
The RK3326 handles 8-bit and 16-bit consoles well, along with Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, arcade classics and many PlayStation games. On N64, PSP or Dreamcast, results depend on the game and settings. PS2 is not supported. Only play games you own the rights to.
Can the R36H Pro Max connect to a TV?
No. It has no HDMI port and no video output: it is designed for playing on its own 4:3 screen. The USB-C OTG port is not used for display, and the USB-C port marked DC 5V is for charging only.
Is there a 128 GB version?
Not on sale yet: its availability is still being confirmed with the supplier. The R36H Pro Max comes with 64 GB on a microSD card. Capacity changes the space available for your games, not performance.
